How to Store Trading Cards in Vancouver’s Rainy Climate

Ultra PRO graded card storage box for slabs, toploaders and ONE-TOUCH holders

Vancouver gets a lot of rain, and the damp months can be rough on a card collection. Moisture curls chrome cards, softens card stock and can leave marks on the surface. The good news is that a few simple habits keep your Pokémon and sports cards safe all year. Here’s how to store trading cards in a humid climate like ours.

Why Humidity Damages Cards

Cards are made of layered paper and coatings that absorb moisture from the air. When the air is damp, the paper swells and the card can bow or curl. Chrome and Prizm style cards are known for this because the shiny front and paper back react differently. Long-term damp can also lead to soft corners, staining and, in the worst cases, mould.

The Ideal Conditions for Card Storage

  • Keep humidity steady at about 35 to 50%. A cheap digital hygrometer tells you what the room is really like.
  • Keep the temperature steady. Room temperature is fine. Big swings matter more than the exact number.
  • Keep cards out of direct sunlight, which fades colours and autographs over time.

Where Not to Store Cards in a Vancouver Home

  • Basements and crawl spaces: often the dampest part of the house.
  • Garages and storage lockers: cold, damp and full of temperature swings.
  • Against exterior walls or windows: condensation builds up here in winter.
  • On the floor: keep boxes on a shelf in case of a leak.

A closet in a heated room is usually the best spot. If your place runs damp, a small dehumidifier makes a big difference.

Sleeves, Toploaders and Storage Boxes

Every raw card should go in a penny sleeve and then a toploader or semi-rigid holder. This protects it from handling, dust and bending. Our guide to protecting trading cards goes into more detail. Keep sleeved cards in a card storage box, and for long-term storage put the boxes in a plastic bin with a lid and a few silica gel packs. Replace or recharge the silica packs every few months.

Do Graded Slabs Need Protecting Too?

Slabs protect a card far better than any sleeve, but they are not completely airtight. Store slabs upright in a slab box, away from damp and sunlight, and avoid stacking them loose where the cases can scratch. Graded card sleeves help keep the plastic clean. Bringing Cards Home from a Show or Shop

On a cold, wet Vancouver day, cards that sit in a car can pick up condensation when you bring them inside. Leave the box closed for an hour or so to let it warm up to room temperature before you open it. Never seal cards in a bin while they feel damp.
