What Is a Rookie Card? RC Logos, Young Guns and More

2023 Panini Hoops Premium Stock #5 Victor Wembanyama Anti Gravity RC

Rookie cards are the most collected cards in the hobby. But what actually makes a card a rookie card, and why do collectors pay more for them? Here is a simple guide.

What Is a Rookie Card?

A rookie card (RC) is one of a player’s first official cards from a licensed set, released in or around their first season as a pro. Because it is the earliest card of that player, it is usually the card collectors want most, and the one that rises fastest if the player becomes a star.

What Does the RC Logo Mean?

Many modern cards print a small RC logo to show they are an official rookie card. It makes rookies easy to spot, but not every true rookie has one, especially older cards, so check the year and set too.

Why Are Rookie Cards Worth More?

Demand. A player has only one rookie season, so their rookies are limited by nature. If the player becomes a star, collectors compete for the same small group of cards. Graded, numbered and short-printed rookies are the hardest to find.
